Brilliant resurgence in river sport for match fishing

This Angler's Mail match fishing blog comes from Preston Innovations man Scott Geens - who talks about the rise of river fishing.

Evesham Winning Catch

LOOKING through my diary recently it occurred to me that other than a few visits to the Gloucester Canal, since June the 16th I have been match fishing exclusively on rivers and loving every minute of it!

I grew up fishing the Severn in the 80’s with my Dad and reading about golden age of river match fishing on the Trent, Severn and Avon but as I got actively involved in match fishing I gradually saw the river scene slide into decline with the arrival of commercial fisheries.

But now it seems everything has gone full circle and there is definitely resurgence in river match fishing, I am aware that localised matches have always been well attended but now running water competitions have been revitalised on a national scale.

Blog PrestonMost of my summer has been spent on the Warwickshire Avon at Evesham as well as the Trent, both tidal and non-tidal for the Division 1 National and in particular the upper reaches at Burton which is one of the most reinvigorated match stretches in the country with waiting lists for the recent matches.

River legend Wayne Swinscoe and Tony Vandome have done wonders to restore this great venue back to its former glory including improvements to access and a great HQ. The roach fishing has been sensational this year, in a recent match I weighed just under 12lb of prime ‘redfins’ which was only good enough for a section win!

Evesham is a fascinating venue, not always prolific but interesting none the less and the lure of qualifying for a big money final ensures that it sells out every week. Coupled with forward thinking organisation from Diana Raphael which now means fishing sensible times, 12pm – 5pm, parking behind every single peg and no chance of ‘drawing the scales’, it has all the allure of a commercial with the added bonus that pegs fees are minimal resulting in a sensible pay-out and healthy prize pot.

Personally this year’s campaign was reasonably successful, culminating in fourth place overall in Prestigious Wychavon Final worth a cool £500 but more importantly the £1 next peg side bet with fellow Preston Innovations backed angler, Michael Buchwalder!

It just goes to show that with a little thought and regard to the needs of the competitor the demand is there and that anglers still want to fish natural venues. If anglers recognise that time and effort has gone into the organisation and the facilities are there they will turn out in their droves, sold out midweek festivals up and down the country, from the Tidal Trent to the Thames are testimony to this.

Biggest of all the competitions is now of course, Riverfest, the brainchild of river legend Dave Harrell. The competition is going from strength to strength with every qualifier this year sold out, clearly indicating the desire to compete for the title of Riverfest Champion and the £12,000.00 winner’s purse.

Personally, I have three chances remaining to make the prestigious final again and after coming agonisingly close to victory last year I will be giving it my best shot. Last year’s show piece finale on the mighty River Wye was really magical to be part of and my Day 2 victory with over 30lb of roach on the stick float was a day’s fishing to be savoured even if it did leave my two-day total just 4lb short of the biggest prize in river fishing.

The sense of occasion was special and saw Andrew ‘Spud’ Murphy crowned champion, a deserved win for a fantastic angler and a true gentleman.

I had this cracking net of roach on day two of last year's Riverfest final.

I had this cracking net of roach on day two of last year’s Riverfest final.

What’s more the matches just keep on coming and my running water campaign looks set to continue well into the winter months with my Kamasan Starlets team joining a buoyant Soar Valley Winter League and my place already booked on the Wye League at Hereford, having the honour of being asked by the mighty Shakespeare Superteam to ‘guest’ for them this term.

So if you haven’t already done so I would urge everyone to dust off those stick floats and for those of you who have never fished a river match give it a go as future of river match fishing has never looked brighter.

Good luck on running water yourself or wherever you’re fishing,

Scott

The intention is to select a squad of anglers to compete in Portugal on the River Sorria next June on a venue that has been used for both European and Youth Championships.

This will be the first of two assessment days with a second to be held sometime early next year on a venue in the Midlands.

The first session will be for 5 hours with the emphasis on international rules to include both pole and waggler fishing.  Bloodworm and joker will be allowed along with other baits, and each angler must provide their own within the following limits:

  • Groundbait  12 litres
  • Joker 500 mls
  • Bloodworm reasonable hook pack
  • Total of all other baits 2 litres
  • Only natural baits are allowed, boilies pellets etc. are barred.

Any interested veterans must nominate by sending in a brief summary of their last three years of competitive angling to Sandra Drew, Competitions & Events Manager, Strelley Hall, Nottingham. How to be a match fishing winner

Angler's Mail match fishing expert Dave Coster of top tackle brand Hardy Greys reveals his expert advice for becoming a winner. After being trounced in his first ever big Open, Dave is never daunted these days. He caught this massive bream (below) during a big tackle show in Germany, pegged next to the German Feeder Champion!

THROUGH our weekly All The Answers feature in Angler’s Mail magazine I get lots of enquiries from would be match anglers, enquiring about the best way to get started and be successful.

It’s a bit trickier these days because the club scene isn’t anywhere as big as it used to be when I first began competitive match fishing. Way back then most anglers belonged to a club first and then progressed into fishing Opens, or joining a fully fledged match team.

However, if you search around it’s still possible in many areas to find an active club, which has regular outings. And I think it’s best to start this way, rather than blowing lots of cash on the Open circuit, where most competitors are pretty clued up these days.

Club matches are more relaxed affairs, although there will still be anglers who take them more seriously than the rest. It’s these people you can learn from and normally, because the stakes are not very high, most anglers will share information with you. Also by competing at this level you have a bit more time to iron out any mistakes you make, because club matches tend to be a bit longer.

Dave has known Cathal Hughes since he was a teenager. He has seen Cathal progress into the top flight of match fishing, winning numerous big money events and also coming second in the World Championships.

The other good thing that comes out of fishing at this level is you normally meet other anglers with the same idea as you, who want to give the odd Open match a try. It’s far better if you team up with someone and pool your knowledge, rather than trying to go it alone.

When you do get to start fishing at a more competitive level, my advice is to target smaller sweepstakes to begin with, rather than big prize money events. Also to try and keep to a couple of venues that have regular fixtures, so you can really get to grips with the waters in question and develop several methods.

After being severely trounced in his first ever big Open match, Dave is never daunted these days. He caught this massive bream during a big tackle show in Germany, pegged next to the German Feeder Champion!

Practice and attention to detail makes good match anglers. Here Dave’s mate Cathal Hughes carefully mixes groundbait ready for another hauling session.

When I started match fishing proper on the River Lea many years ago, I had become pretty efficient at catching lots of fish when pleasure fishing, but I soon came down to earth when I entered my first big match. I drew next to one of the top anglers at the time and he won by a mile, leaving me in pieces!

But in retrospect this was one of the best things that could have happened. I asked the winner if he would stay on and give me some tips and he duly obliged. He showed me what to do and then told me to practise as much as I could. Most importantly telling me not to waste any more money as pools fodder until I could catch the way I’d been shown.

I spent another year trying to master the Lea, along the way realising that pleasure fishing results are never the same as when you put a match on a water.

The penny had dropped and when I finally thought I was good enough I enjoyed a brilliant run of success on the river. I ended up not just winning sweepstakes but also some pretty big matches to boot, including the River Lea Championships and also breaking the match record on the Lower Navigation. I can never thank the angler who helped me enough!

Anyway, once I had become the one to beat I soon got noticed and was invited to join the mighty Essex County outfit. That led onto even greater things, fishing with (and against) many top name anglers all over the country. I soon gained a cabinet full of trophies including some very prestigious ones. That led to sponsorship and paid consultancy work with several major tackle companies. I even got a trial for England!

Blog cocoAll these years later I’m a bit more relaxed about my match fishing. I don’t have time to go chasing all over the country like I used to, but I still enjoy every minute, whether I go on a local sweep or a big event. I still get the same buzz, particularly if I win or frame.

So there will always be chances for those breaking into match fishing. My advice is to just do it, but remember slowly slowly catches the pot of gold!

Ireland fishing action with match star Darren Cox

Darren Cox, match fishing ace from Garbolino, ventured across to Ireland for the World Pairs last month. Seen below with a winning catch caught from an island during the event, Darren reveals all in this Angler's Mail blog.

Horese Island 18kg Sept 2014

WHAT a great season we’ve had this year as fishermen!

We have been so lucky with the weather for such a long period with just enough rain at the right time to freshen up the rivers and still enough warmth to keep the commercials fishing their heads off.

September and October have been really hectic for me as it is a key time for finalising the launch of all our new Garbolino products to the industry and there is a lot to be done. I did however manage to get across to Ireland for the World Pairs with my fishing partner Simon Fry.

This is a fantastic week on some of the most stunning venues I have every fished in my life and the fishing is always great. To make the trip even better this year we were joined by ‘Mr White Acres’ Clint Elliott and his partner the ‘Earl of Bolingey Lakes’ Andy Dare who were great company.

Clint knows his way round much of England...but got a bit lost in Ireland, as he's showing here!

Garadice Lake

Garadice Lake

The week is based around two sections in the Enniskillen area with famous sections such as the ‘Airport, Crom Castle and Killadeas’ and three around Ballinamore and Ballyconnel with Garadice lake, Brackley and Bunerky, Kiltybarden and Lough Scurr all making up the sections. Anglers were spread out so that everyone was given a chance of catching a few fish every day which is generally what happened.

On the boat to Horse island

On the boat to Horse island

To add a bit of spice to the event the organisers had put in a ‘virgin’ section on Horse Island just offshore from Killadeas near Enniskillen. There was a lot of excitement about this island as everyone believed it could throw up some big weights but come the practice match on the Sunday nobody really wanted to be there as we believed we would be feeding it for the first match on the Monday!

So what did I go and do? Draw both Simon and I on Horse Island!

Obviously nobody had a clue how it was going to fish so we set up standard feeder tactics to fish between 25-60m out. The depth was perfect to catch even on the pole but we figured it wouldn’t be an option that day as no feed had gone in.

I thought we may struggle as is often the case on first time venues so I also set up my Garbolino G System Xtra Power feeder and cast it until I found a drop off over 90m out. I clipped it up and hoped I wouldn’t need it but after an hours fishing and only a few perch being caught I decided to take the gamble and go for it.

I had ten very quick casts to get some bait out and then sat on my hands. I didn’t wait long as a 10oz hybrid soon tried to pull the rod in. Fifteen minutes later I had a 5lb bream which really got me excited and for the rest of the match I picked fish off in bursts ending up with five bream up to 5lb and around ten hybrids up to 4lb!

Blog GarbolinoIt’s great when a plan like that comes together as I won the island with 18.750kg see catch picture at top of blog), and that ended up winning the match on a tough day.

We also had some great banter on the day with the likes of Cathal Hughes, Tom Sexton, Stephen Leddy and many others on the boat trip to and from the island.

The whole week was great although the draw gods evaded me for the rest of the week… it’s Simon’s turn to draw next year!

If you want a good match away with a great group of anglers get booked on the World Pairs for next year, you will love it!

The 20 qualifier matches have meant that 60 anglers will compete for the title of RiverFest Champion 2014 worth a cool £12,000.

As you see above, last year’s winner was Andrew Murphy, the Welsh international.

AnglingTrustlogoSky Sports will be attending to cover the action this time and spectators are encouraged to come along and watch as the weekend unfolds.

More details below on where and when you can see this Angling Trust-run showpiece event.

Total prize money of £29,000 makes the competition bigger and better than in 2013.

Thames Water and Severn Trent Water have demonstrated the commitment to angling by contributing £2,000 each towards that fund.

Leading bait company Bait-Tech will provide each of the finalists with a variety of products.

Daiwa Sports have donated a prize for the angler who catches the biggest fish over the weekend.
