We have also had for some years a desire to re-introduce a pairs event. The opportunity of working with the Canal & River Trust to deliver these targets came just at the right time. It will also further enhance the already close relationship between the two organisations. I am confident that the pilot this year will be a real success and pave the way for a countrywide Canal Pairs event from 2015.”

JUNE for me has been great fishing, as the carp decided to spawn a little later this year the commercials have been very up and down.
There have still been plenty of fish to catch at the right time of day but some of the match results have shown that the fish are still shoaled up tighter than normal.
Lots of matches have been won with very big weights with much smaller back-up framing weights.
Luckily for me this lull in consistent sport coincided with me concentrating on some canal fishing.
My first task was to try and get through the next round of the Drennan Knockout Cup staged on the Shropshire Union Canal at Church Eaton/Little Onn.
This is a wonderful piece of canal which I haven’t fished for over 12 years. It brought back a lot of good memories when I used to travel with Clint Elliott when he lived up near me before moving to Cornwall.
The practice match I booked on didn’t quite go to plan though! I spent several evenings prior to the match making up squatt rigs for a full 5 hours squatt fishing practice, something we don’t do a lot of these days and I wanted to be ready for it.
My plans were scuppered when I pulled out the bream flyer and everyone said I would win the match! To cut a long story short I did with a lovely net of bream and skimmers for 15 lb 10 oz. A nice day’s fishing but not very good squatt fishing practice.
Come the main knockout day I drew a much less fancied area but started well on the squatt and managed to snaffle a 2 lb bream on my squatt rig after about two hours. This put me well up in my section so gave me some time to look for one on my chopped worm rig across.
Two others in quick succession were very welcome and gave me a nice 7 lb 12 oz and enough to go through comfortably.
Next stop Viaduct hopefully for some real bagging!
My next stint on a canal has been a lot different to the ‘Shroppy’; the Gloucester canal is wide and deep but I love it. It’s what I call a ‘mans’ canal and not for the faint hearted with depths a full top 5 in areas!
My Kamasan Starlets team have the Winter League Final coming up this weekend so we have been putting some practice in.
It’s lovely fishing with lots of pole fish, skimmers, roach and eels on bloodworm and joker as well as some bream if you are lucky on the feeder. Hopefully next month I can report some good news about what happened.
I also have my first go at the Riverfest competition coming up. Unfortunately I was away in France when the tickets came out so only managed to get three tickets, hopefully one of them will be the ‘golden ticket’ to the final.
The rivers appear to be fishing really well all over the country at the moment.
We had a bit of rain which put some flow and colour into them for the start of the season which really helped with good weight of bream and small fish from all over the country.
They are in need of a drop more now which is forecast this weekend so if you’re going out be prepared for it.
It certainly won’t do the Bristol Avon any harm when I get there next week.
Who’ll be the next Fish’o'Mania winner? Jamie Hughes, the reigning champion will face stiff competition from aces including Garbolino men.
I would like to take the opportunity to wish all the Fish’O’Mania finalists good luck next weekend especially the Garbolino boys Steve Cooke, Andy Geldart and Shaun Cooke. Allez les blues as they say in France!
If you’re coming to Fish’O’Mania at Cudmore on the Saturday (and there’s a free ticket with the preview in Tuesday’s Angler’s Mail magazine) I will be there. Not competing this time, but helping out on the Vale Royal Angling stand … so come and say hello. If not, then see you here on the Angler’s Mail website Blogs section next month.

IN ANOTHER TV boost for angling, Sky Sports have confirmed they will be covering the 2014 Match This finals - Britain's richest match fishing event.
The Match This event, which attracts the cream of UK match fishing anglers who compete in qualifiers around the country, has a minimum first place prize of £50,000, making it the biggest jackpot.
The final takes place on the prolific Match lake at Maver Larford lakes on Saturday 30th August and will be shown on Sky in the autumn. Competing are some of the top names including former Fish O Mania winner Jamie Hughes, who is a former Angler’s Mail Matchman of the Year, and bloggers for this Angler’s Mail website – Darren Cox and Lee Kerry.
The event will covered by the Sky Sports Tight Lines team, and this year will once again have its own one-hour long show broadcasting the highlights of the finals in the autumn.
The programme will be presented by well known angler and tv pundit Rob Hughes, who also presents the BCAC and UK Champs events and appears as a reporter at Fish ‘O’ Mania for Sky.
Rob said: “Big events like Mega Match This showcase our sport at the highest level and what better place to see them than Sky Sports. Mega Match This is at the top of everyone’s list of events to win, and it’s a pleasure to come along, record history, and also to witness an amazing and exciting event in progress.”
Event organizer Phil Briscoe added: “We’ve worked hard with the Match This concept which has become a major event in the angling calendar and it’s encouraging to see that Sky recognise this and are covering the event again for us in 2014. It’s a big prize that brings along with it a lot of credibility, and the fact that it will be on television adds a further dimension for both competitors and spectators alike”.

THE Evesham Festival - on this weekend - is bigger, better and more exciting than ever before with great fishing and lots more. Here is an Angler's Mail guide with the help of our mate at the organising DHP organisation, Tom Scholey...
It’s a great day out over bank holiday weekend. Yes, you pick your day, or go to all – 23rd, 24th and 25th August. There’s something for all the family beside the lovely Warwickshire Avon! A big match takes place each day, fishing 11am to 4pm: Saturday is the Evesham Championship; Sunday sees the Wychavon Championship; and Monday is the Match Fishing Team Championship.
This is a skill fest! You will see a host of angling’s most skilled anglers go into battle on one of match fishing’s most legendary venues. If you want to see how river fishing should be done, then there is no better place to head!
These are proper experts. They are not the guys you’ll see locally winning 10-peggers on ‘easy puddles’. On the bill are five-times World Champ Alan Scotthorne, Will Raison, Des Shipp, Dave Harrell, Wayne Swinscoe and Steve Hemingray. Yes, you’ll see world-beating Drennan Team England aces!
The Avon is a mixed venue. This year, the sport has proved more varied and exciting than it ever has before – and it looks like the mighty River Avon might have more than its fair share of surprises in store for competitors this year.
It’s not just small fish. Up until the last fortnight, the river’s famous population of barbel had been conspicuous by it’s absence so far this season, but now the whiskery critters have really switched on to the feed. The top five in Wednesday’s veterans event all had a barbel!
Pole will be evident at Evesham, but you’ll see various methods deployed – even big pellets for barbel!
The festival show has great tackle. This, again, is promised to be bigger and better than before, Angler’s Mail are told. Confirmed exhibitors include Preston Innovations, Korum, Frenzee, Nash …and a host of retailers with piles of bargain tackle for you to bag.
You can sup super ales! Running alongside the festival is the Evesham Beer Festival, taking place in the on-site beer tent on the Crown Meadow, and run by local landlord, and real ale expert, Nigel Smith. The stand will boast more than 20 real ales, ranging in strength and flavour, to ensure that there is something for every palette.
Tasty food too! If food is your thing, you will also find plenty of good nosh to go at, courtesy of the festival’s new catering partners, Event Street Foods. Alongside premium-quality burgers and hot dogs, these guys have a couple of their own specialities – namely pulled pork and stone-baked pizzas!
It’s a cheap day out . Entry to the festival is free, with gates open from 9am on each of the three days. Evesham’s Crown and Corporation Meadows are the places to head to get involved. On-site car parking is £7 per vehicle.
The location is central. Evesham sits snugly in Worcestershire, in the great English Midlands, and can be reached from all directions… which explains why so many people return year after year. For satnav users, the venue can be found at the postcode: WR11 4SS. Alternatively, just head into Evesham and follow the signs for the festival!
Our full online match results service will be back tomorrow afternoon, Tuesday (August 26), after the long Bank Holiday weekend, when a must-read issue of Angler's Mail also hits the shelf!
Pole will be evident at Evesham, but you'll see various methods deployed - even big pellets for barbel!
As we went into the Bank Holiday weekend, Denis White picked up the Veterans title at the Evesham Festival. Denis is also faring very well in the all-new Rivers mini-league in our mag’s Preston Innovations Matchman of the Year.
Match anglers will love the stepped-up coverage in Angler’s Mail magazine again this week, including exclusive latest on the better-than-ever Matchman of the Year, sponsored by Preston Innovations.
We exclusively reveal brilliant new tackle from match brand Guru too – kit you’ll want to use!
The new issue (on sale from Tuesday, August 26) also gets to grips with rudd at the wonder water of the moment; tackles crucians (for a huge haul!); looks at fishery management and advises on how to grips with new waters.
